Local governance prioritizes the local issues. Local democracy reflects the local constituency. Democracy thrives when government is not run by an echo chamber. For these reasons, we — Independents, Republicans, Democrats, and others — have come together in support of our local independent party called Bedford United.
Bedford United candidates are focused to improve our town's planning, communicating, and budgeting. Priorities are to effectively manage local nuts-and-bolts, be accessible to residents, and represent the best interest of our town. We're voting for Bedford United candidates on November 2nd. To summarize our platform:
Bedford United offers choice for residents not beholden to one political party. Bedford United is a local third party that supports candidates who are also endorsed by Republican and Democratic party committees -- similar to how Libertarian, Green, Conservative, and Working Family parties operate. Bedford United's unique qualification is that candidates prioritize local issues in a collaborative spirit.
In our view, local town elections would be run like our school board -- that is, nonpartisan. We see nothing partisan about properly functioning local governance. As we like to say, nothing political about working with our neighbors to improve parks, potholes, public safety, and property taxes.
From this, Bedford United was established to give a voice to those more focused on local matters than national political partisanship. Being Bedford United does not mean you need to renounce other affiliations, as demonstrated by many Democrats and Republicans who have endorsed our candidates.
As the current Town Board is made up entirely of Democrats, our slate offers candidates who are Independents and Republicans to diversify that one-party rule and bring balance through a range of viewpoint representation. Bedford United acts as a vehicle to bridge together our town's community members rather than splitting into political tribes. These tribal tendencies portray one party as all things virtuous vs. all things evil. We know this is simply not true. We understand that diversity of perspective is how a thriving democracy achieves optimal solutions.
We are your neighbors. We are moms, dads, grandparents, veterans, volunteers, civil servants, first responders, patriots, environmentalists, feminists, workers, employers, minorities, and children of American immigrants. We are not tied to a party line that we tow with cult-like zeal. We are not deterred by those who perpetuate political polarization. We choose optimism over division.
We humbly ask for your support in the coming months and on November 2nd. We look forward to working with a collaborative governing body for everyone in Bedford!
